Negotiating with Autistic Individuals

This presentation provides a personal perspective on life with my twenty-four-year-old son, Jackson, who was diagnosed at age six. I discuss his journey and the various challenges he has encountered.

Drawing from my background in law enforcement, I offer a unique viewpoint on communication. While communicating with Jackson has often been difficult, we have developed successful strategies that mirror the techniques I have used in professional negotiations. I also share stories regarding Jackson’s brief interactions with law enforcement, which were handled with the utmost professionalism by our local police department.

This presentation is well-suited for law enforcement personnel and anyone who communicates with individuals in crisis. It includes practical communication forms to utilize when interacting with someone on the spectrum.
